The use of smoke in aerial visual effects dates back to the 1920s in Sky Writing. Smoke was not used as part of aerial acrobatics until the Black Cats performed at the Farnborough Air Show in 1957. Since then, smoke oil has become a major component of modern air shows and most shows use smoke.
Smoke Oil Aircraft
In order for your aircraft to produce amazing aerobatic smoke, you need a smoke oil system. Part of this system includes the tank that will hold the oil inside the aircraft. It is extremely important that this tank is strong and well secured. Not only is oil heavy, but aerobatic aircraft also undergo high-gravity maneuvers - meaning you don't want smoky oil splattering all over your aircraft.

Aircraft exhaust system manufacturers recommend using only approved exhaust oil for safety and performance. The use of unapproved oil, or the use of additives, can be dangerous and also harmful to the exhaust systems or even the aircraft itself.
